Book excerpt/synopsis : Blood has always been thicker than water for two Northern Irish brothers caught in the Belfast foster system, but a debt of past violence will be paid by not just them, but also by those they left behind. Ciaran Devine, who made Belfast headlines seven years ago as the “schoolboy killer,” is about to walk free. At the age of twelve, he confessed to the brutal murder of his foster father; his testimony mitigated the sentence of his older brother, Thomas, who was also found at the crime scene, covered in blood. But DCI Serena Flanagan, the only officer who could convince a young, frightened Ciaran to speak, has silently harbored doubts about his confession all this time. Ciaran’s release means several things: a long-anticipated reunion with Thomas, who still wields a dangerous influence over his younger brother; the call-to-action of a man bent on revenge for his father’s death; and major trouble for Ciaran’s assigned probation officer. Meanwhile, Serena Flanagan has just returned to the force from her battle with breast cancer, only to endure the pitying looks of her coworkers and a mountain of open case files. She will soon discover that even closed cases can unleash terror on the streets of Belfast. From the Hardcover edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : Every one of us has a story to tell (a testimony) and a reason to praise God. You did not get this far in life on your own merit. You got this far by Gods Grace and Mercy. You got this far because God gave you what you did not deserve. Take a moment and look back at all the things in life you have done, (whether you got caught or not is not the importance), think about everything you have done, look at yourself in the mirror and be honest with yourself, then you will be able to see that you were given favor by God, and He did not give you what you deserved. If you still question whether God is real, look into the eyes of your children, your sisters, your brothers, your husband, your wife, breathe in and breathe out, if you woke up on this side of the dirt today, thats how you can know that God is real, you cannot sustain yourself, God sustains you. If you have read the poems in this book and you were affected by them, if they touched your heart and you dont know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, I encourage you to come into a relationship with him. Make God the Lord of your life, and watch things happen in your life that you cannot explain. . . . . . . . thats GOD!!!!!!!!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : While teaching at an all-black middle school in Atlanta, Meira Levinson realized that students' individual self-improvement would not necessarily enable them to overcome their profound marginalization within American society. This is because of a civic empowerment gap that is as shameful and antidemocratic as the academic achievement gap targeted by No Child Left Behind. No Citizen Left Behind argues that students must be taught how to upend and reshape power relationships directly, through political and civic action. Drawing on political theory, empirical research, and her own on-the-ground experience, Levinson shows how de facto segregated urban schools can and must be at the center of this struggle. Recovering the civic purposes of public schools will take more than tweaking the curriculum. Levinson calls on schools to remake civic education. Schools should teach collective action, openly discuss the racialized dimensions of citizenship, and provoke students by engaging their passions against contemporary injustices. Students must also have frequent opportunities to take civic and political action, including within the school itself. To build a truly egalitarian society, we must reject myths of civic sameness and empower all young people to raise their diverse voices. Levinson's account challenges not just educators but all who care about justice, diversity, or democracy.

With short hair? In public? Was that allowed? Indeed it was.’ A cool and contemporary look at one of the most intriguing aspects of musical theatre – just what is it that makes a woman in trousers so appealing? Accompanied by a piano, mezzo-soprano Jessica Walker dons a few well-chosen items of male attire, giving a supremely well-sung performance that conjures up an entire world, from the swaggering cross-dressers of the Victorian Music Hall to the ambiguous boy-heroes of Mozart and Strauss, to the back-room bulldykes of the Harlem Renaissance. Commissioned and produced by Opera North Projects with the Southbank Centre touring partner Welcome to Yorkshire. The Girl I Left Behind Me is a provocative, flirtatious, personal one woman-guide which deliciously recalls a forgotten chapter of female performance. The Girl I Left Behind Me will be performed at The Barbican Centre in November 2011 as part of the Bite Season.

Book excerpt/synopsis : In 1938 when Hitler annexed Austria making it part of his Greater German Reich, approximately 185,000 Jews lived in Vienna. Unlike their counterparts in Germany proper, these Jews had only a short time to make plans to emigrate. The development and application of racially discriminatory policies in Germany took nearly five years to come to full fruition. In Austria, the ruthless attempts at exclusion of the Jewish population from both social and economic institutions took barely five months. The editor and his parents were among the few individuals who were fortunate to gain entrance into the United States during this time of crisis. Four days before their departure, the U.S. visa stamped in their passports was the only thing that saved the three from deportation to Poland. The Sechers unavoidably left behind five members of their immediate family who were still waiting to receive visas, but they firmly believed, even as rumors of further restrictive policies against the Jews circulated, that the remaining members of their family would be well out of reach of Nazi policies designed to remove Jews from their homes. There is a lengthy introduction, but the major part of the book is a chronological arrangement of the many letters exchanged between the father and mother and those individuals left behind in Vienna. The letters tell a story of the struggles the remaining five faced in their efforts to stay alive. Of the five persons who contributed to this correspondence, only Fanny Secher (the author's paternal grandmother) died a natural death. The others were deported and never heard from again.
