Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : Responding to the current surge in present-tense novels, Making Time is an innovative contribution to narratological research on present-tense usage in narrative fiction. Breaking with the tradition of conceptualizing the present tense purely as a deictic category denoting synchronicity between a narrative event and its presentation, the study redefines present-tense narration as a fully-fledged narrative strategy whose functional potential far exceeds temporal relations between story and discourse. The first part of the volume presents numerous analytical categories that systematically describe the formal, structural, functional, and syntactic dimensions of present-tense usage in narrative fiction. These categories are then deployed to investigate the uses and functions of present-tense narration in selected twenty-first century novels, including Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall, Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, Ian McEwan’s Nutshell, and Irvine Welsh’s Skagboys. The seven case studies serve to illustrate the ubiquity of present-tense narration in contemporary fiction, ranging from the historical novel to the thriller, and to investigate the various ways in which the present tense contributes to narrative worldmaking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : As Genesis begins with the Divine blessing on Man (Gen. 1:26), so Psalm 1 opens with “Blessed is the man.” All blessedness for man is shown to consist in subjection, obedience, and occupation with God’s Law. It is the Tree of Life to him; and meditating on this, he becomes like a well-watered tree planted by God’s ever flowing River of Life in the Paradise of God. (See Rev. 22; Ezek. 47:1-5; Ps. 46:4-5). James Brandon, a pastor and missionary, shares encouragement from the Psalms in this devotional commentary. He breaks down the structure of the Psalms and drills down into their lessons. His focus in this first volume is the first book of the Psalms, including Psalm 21, which he calls the “central psalm.” It sets forth the eternal life and blessedness of God’s king, Jesus Christ. This volume includes an examination of Psalm 16, which is the first of the Mictam Psalms. These Psalms are prayers for help and deliverance. The Psalms are a wonderland of devotion. They will enrich your soul, enlighten your mind, and encourage your spirit. Most importantly, they provide principles for living your life as you walk with the Lord.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : Chris Comerford explores cinematic digital television as an artistic classification and an academic object of study, and illuminates the slippage in definitions of previously understood media forms. The growth of television as an artistic, informative medium has given rise to shifts in the aesthetic style of the programmes we watch, and this book outlines these shifts along with the contemporary debates and critical theory surrounding them. Comerford looks at the forms and aesthetics of television, the production standards influencing streaming television and the agency of audiences, and provides case studies of key TV shows illustrating these shifts, including Twin Peaks: The Return, WandaVision, Hacks and Russian Doll. Navigating the levels of production and reception in cinematic digital television, the book uses film-inspired TV as a lightning rod for understanding our narrative screen media landscape and the classifications we use to negotiate it. As an essential reading for both scholars and students of media and television studies, this book provides a much-needed consideration of the changing landscape of television.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : Jane Campion on Jane Campion offers a unique perspective on the creative process of one of the greatest contemporary film directors, through a series of interviews from the early days of Campion’s career to her most recent projects, conducted by Michel Ciment. Each chapter contains the study of a film, starting with the short films that Campion made during her film studies at the Australian Film Television and Radio School and ending with her last film, The Power of the Dog. A biographical study and a general essay place her work in context. Organized chronologically, film by film, the interviews are illustrated by film stills and photographs taken on set, annotated scripts, storyboards and personal documents lent by Campion. The book also reproduces three short stories and a text about the poet John Keats written by the director, along with actress Holly Hunter’s ‘Scattered Memories’ of their collaboration on The Piano and Top of the Lake. A detailed bibliography and a filmography of the filmmaker complete this reference work, which contains more than 300 colour and black-and-white images. MICHEL CIMENT, coordinator of the French film magazine Positif, has been a contributor to the French radio programme Le Masque et la Plume (France Inter) since 1970 and produced Projection privée for the radio station France Culture for 26 years. Senior Lecturer Emeritus in American Civilization at Paris Diderot University, he is also the author of some 30 books about the cinema, including Kubrick, Kazan on Kazan, Conversations with Losey, Film World: interviews with cinema’s leading directors and Boorman (British Film Institute Prize). The Power of the Dog was awarded Silver Lion for Best Director in Venice. The film also won 3 Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture in Drama, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee). The first French edition of this book was awarded a prize for the best film book by the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics. Reading recommended on pads and smartphone for an optimal experience of color illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : What gives crime fiction its distinctive shape and form? What makes it such a compelling vehicle of social and political critique? Unwilling Executioner argues that the answer lies in the emerging genre's complex and intimate relationship with the bureaucratic state and modern capitalism, and the contradictions that ensue once the state assumes control of the criminal justice system. This study offers a dramatic new interpretation of the genre's emergence and evolution over a three hundred year period and as a genuinely transnational phenomenon. From its roots in the tales of criminality circulated widely in Paris and London in the early eighteenth century, this book examines the extraordinary richness, diversity and complexity of the genre's subsequent thematizations of crime and policing—moving from France and Britain and from continental Europe and the United States to other parts of the globe. In doing so it offers new ways of reading established crime novelists like Gaboriau, Doyle, Hammett, and Simenon, beyond their national contexts and an impulse to characterize their work as either straightforwardly 'radical' or 'conservative'. It also argues for the centrality of writers like Defoe, Gay, Godwin, Vidocq, Morrison, and more recently Manchette, Himes, and Sjöwall and Wahlöö to a project where crime and policing are rooted, and shown to be rooted, in the social and economic conditions of their time. These are all deeply political writers even if their novels exhibit no interest in directly promoting political causes or parties. The result is an agile, layered, and far-reaching account of the crime story's ambivalent relationship to the justice system and its move to complicate our understanding of what crime is and how society is policed and for whose benefit.
