Download PDF or read online New York Amish Book by Karen M. Johnson-Weiner and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : In a book that highlights the existence and diversity of Amish communities in New York State, Karen M. Johnson-Weiner draws on twenty-five years of observation, participation, interviews, and archival research to emphasize the contribution of the Amish to the state's rich cultural heritage. While the Amish settlements in Pennsylvania and Ohio are internationally known, the Amish population in New York, the result of internal migration from those more established settlements, is more fragmentary and less visible to all but their nearest non-Amish neighbors. All of the Amish currently living in New York are post-World War II migrants from points to the south and west. Many came seeking cheap land, others as a result of schism in their home communities. The Old Order Amish of New York are relative newcomers who, while representing an old or plain way of life, are bringing change to the state. So that readers can better understand where the Amish come from and their relationship to other Christian groups, New York Amish traces the origins of the Amish in the religious confrontation and political upheaval of the Protestant Reformation and describes contemporary Amish lifestyles and religious practices. Johnson-Weiner welcomes readers into the lives of Amish families in different regions of New York State, including the oldest New York Amish community, the settlement in the Conewango Valley, and the diverse settlements of the Mohawk Valley and the St. Lawrence River Valley. The congregations in these regions range from the most conservative to the most progressive. Johnson-Weiner reveals how the Amish in particular regions of New York realize their core values in different ways; these variations shape not only their adjustment to new environments but also the ways in which townships and counties accommodate-and often benefit from-the presence of these thriving faith communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : Bollywood Weddings explores how Indian-American Hindus negotiate two vastly different wedding cultures: those of mainstream America and of Hindu India. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork and drawing on recent advances in material culture studies, Ramdya suggests that Bollywood, whose Indian origins grants it authenticity from the Hindu perspective and whose emphasis on romance accommodates American values, emerges as the key mediating third culture that allows Indian-American Hindus to reinforce their community's identity as ethnic and American even as it confirms that success in America need not be bought at the expense of one's religious background and cultural heritage.

About the Novel: Sing Down the Moon is a Newbery Honor winning story told through the perspective of a young Navaho girl. Fourteen-year-old Bright Morning takes her family's sheep to graze one spring day. While tending to the flock, she is captured by Spanish Slavers and sold into service. Fortunately, she is able to escape and return home. Unfortunately, her home is promptly taken from her as her tribe is forced out of their canyon in Arizona and relocated to Fort Sumner in New Mexico. The long walk of the Navaho people is described through the eyes of Bright Morning, who sees the migration as the end of her people. Sing Down the Moon is a powerful story about slavery, migration and tradition. All of our content is aligned to your State Standards and are written to Bloom's Taxonomy.

Book excerpt/synopsis : Paul Frees, known as the Man of a Thousand Voices, was more than an actor providing the unforgettable voices of such amusing, animated cartoon characters as Boris Badenov on The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show and The Pillsbury Doughboy, the Ghost Host in Walt Disney’s Haunted Mansion at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and narrator of classic films, such as The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and The Shaggy Dog (1959). He was also an accomplished artist. Author, publisher, and history detective Ben Ohmart recently discovered a creative cache of Frees’ scripts, lyrics, songs, paintings, and furniture designs that were unearthed only recently and never before seen by the public. This revised 2nd Edition includes a full-length screenplay, The Demon from Dimension X, unused material once written for satirical musician Spike Jones, and Freddy, a teleplay that has never been seen or produced. Experience the exciting evidence that explains how the Man of a Thousand Voices was also a Man of Many Talents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt/synopsis : The story of Ireland—its graces and shortcomings, triumphs and sorrows—is told by ballads, dirges, and humorous songs of its common people. Music is a direct and powerful expression of Irish folk culture and an aspect of Irish life beloved throughout the rest of the world. Incredibly, the largest single gathering of Irish folk songs had been almost inaccessible because, originally newspaper based, it was available in only three libraries, in Belfast, Dublin, and Washington D.C. Sam Henry's “Songs of the People” makes the music available to a wider audience than the collector ever imagined. Comprising nearly 690 selections, this thoroughly annotated and indexed collection is a treasure for anyone who performs, composes, studies, collects, or simply enjoys folk music. It is valuable as an outstanding record of Irish folk songs before World War II, demonstrating the historical ties between Irish and Southern folk culture and the tremendous Irish influence on American folk music. In addition to the songs themselves and their original commentary, Sam Henry's “Songs of the People” includes a glossary, bibliography, discography, index of titles and first lines, melodic index, index of the original sources of the songs and information about them, geographical index of sources, and three appendixes related to the original song series in the Northern Constitution.
